Budapest is the melting pot where East meets West. The region has been inhabited for at least 2000 years, so it is only up to your taste whether you begin your tour in 400 A.D. at the Aquincum- Obuda in Roman villa, 1400 A.D. in a Castle Hill with middle age Christian or Jewish temples, or in a Turkish Bath from the 15th century. But if you prefer modern art, you can always visit the XIXth century at the amazing Art Nouveau building of the Museum of Applied Arts, or the Palace of Arts that serves as a concert hall as well as a space for contemporary art exhibitions.
